Special thanks to:

- Brian Horsey whose flightdynamic was a fantastic base for our flightmodel,
- Wolfram Beckert who testet and fundamentally improved the flightdynamic,
- Dieter Ramthun (of the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation), who helped us to answer some questions on technical details of the C-54/DC-4,
- Dale DeLuca, who made a lot of very nice repaints of classic liveries for our DC-4,
- Ulf Nordin from Lulea who provided us with a lot of webspace.

DOUGLAS DC-4 PANEL

This file contains an updated version of James Underwood's DC-4 Panel

Design:
James Underwood, December 2002
e-mail: jcumus@bluemarble.net

Please mind the notes of the original author in the Panel Docs folder!

NOTE: You will probably have to size the main panel of this package vertically to fit your screen. To do so, simply grab the bottom of the main panel with the mouse. The panel will "pop-up" an inch or so, then drag (contract) it up another inch and hit "alt" twice. You should have some sky showing at the top, so grab the top edge of the panel and drag (expand) it up to the top.

NOTE2: For some insane reason I have yet to figure, the default Microsoft ADF radio (Bendix-King) has a four-digit-plus-decimal (xxxx.xx) tuner. And everything else seems to be slaved around this oxymoron. Thus, when you tune my ADF radio to, say, 414, you may actually have set it to 1414 - which may pick up a radio station in Pascaloosa, but won't tune in any NDB in the Known World. So, to be sure, I've included the whole default radio stack as a pop-up (shift+3) so you can tune the ADF there if it doesn't work. I tried like hell to solve this - spent whole days trying other digit-only ADFs - and to my dismay have had to resign myself to Bendix-King. Sigh. If anyone knows a fix for this please let me know and we'll upload it.

Sound:
As Sound we recommend the fantastic DC-4 soundpackage of Reinhard Herrmann who has reworked the original DC-4 sound of Bernd Drefahl and Mike Hambly's Connie sound. You can download this sound on www.SurClaro or www.SurClaro.com.
_________________________________________________________________________________________

Installation in FS2002:

1. Unpack/extract the contents of the main zip-file into FS2002's Aircraft folder.
2. Unzip the contents of Gauges.zip to the \Gauges directory of FS2002.

CARGO TOOL

With CargoTool you can change the weight values. Before every flight the specific weight of the DC-4 can be changed. CargoTool works by editing the aircraft weights in the aircraft.cfg file of the DC-4.

CargoTool was installed together with the DC-4 Tanker folder.
The Cargo Tool file (CargoTool.exe) must be in the main folder of the Douglas DC-4 Tanker (the folder which contains the Aircraft.cfg file). This folder also must contains the "CargoTool.cfg" file and the "CargoToolHelp.html" file.

Please notice: This tool is only built for the FS-Design Berlin's DC-4!

How to use:
- CargoTool is started by double-click of the CargoTool.exe which is in the main folder of the DC-4 Tanker (for using CargoTool start CargoToolHelp).
- CargoTool Help is started by double-click of the CargoToolHelp.html which is also in the main folder of the DC-4 Tanker.

Please notice:
If you restart the Microsoft Flight Simulator the last saved weight settings are still valid.

On the airline/ airplane

Buffalo Airways has been in the business of providing scheduled and chartered passenger and freight service in Canada since 1968. Buffalo’s fleet consists of 4 Douglas DC-4’s,
2 Curtiss C-46 Commandos, 4 Canadair CL-215 Water Bombers, 4 PBY-5A Canso Water Bombers and 10 Douglas DC-3’s.
In keeping with there fleet of heavy piston-engine transports, Buffalo has kept the four company-owned DC-4s working in various roles. Two of these aircraft can be found flying freight from Yellowknife to various destinations around Canada. The other two DC-4s have returned to service as DC-4 Water Bombers/Fire Suppression Tankers, providing the delivery of retardant to forest fires in the NWT (http://www.buffaloairways.com).

An employee of Buffalo Airways told us, that Fire Suppression Tanker 457 (C-FIQM) was involved in the Berlin Airlift - and is in use today!

The Douglas C-54/DC-4 was developed under the darkening clouds of World War 2,
and upon USA's entry into the war all DC-4s then on the production line
were requisitioned for the US military. The result was that the 1st DC-4
off the production line flew in 1942 wearing olive drab camoflage as the
C-54 Skymaster. The C-54 admirably fitted into the USAAF's long range
transport role and 1162 were built through the war years.

Post war many surplus C-54s were available for airliner conversion. The
type initially formed the mainstay of most long haul passenger carriers.
An additional 78 additional DC-4s were produced by Douglas to new orders.
Eventually the type was replaced by faster, pressurised DC-6s and
Constellations. DC-4s eventually filtered down to third level operators
and freight operators.

Notable developments of the DC-4 include Aviation Trader's much modified
Carvair freighter while Canadair built a number with RollsRoyce Merlin
engines and pressurised fuselages. The DC-4 also formed the basis for the
larger DC-6 and DC-7. The C-54/DC-4 was the first airliner to introduce a
circular section, constant diameter fuselage which made stretching the basic
aircraft relatively simple).

The C-54 was the workhorse of the Berlin Airlift 1948-49. More than 240 C-54
of the U.S. forces came here to use.

Powerplants:
Four 1080kW (1450shp) Pratt & Whitney R20002SDBG Twin Wasp 14 cylinder twin row
radial piston engines driving three blade constant speed propellers.

Performance:
Max speed 451km/h (244kt), cruising speed 365km/h (197kt).
Service ceiling 22,300ft. Range with a 5200kg (11,440lb) payload 4023km (2172nm).

Weights:
Empty 19,460kg (43,300lb), max takeoff 33,112kg (73,000lb).

Dimensions:
Wing span 35.81m (117ft 6in), length 28.60m (93ft10in), height 8.38m (27ft 6in).
Wing area 135.6m2 (1460sq ft).

Production:
Total DC-4 production comprised one DC-4E, 78 commercial DC-4s, 1162 military
C54 Skymasters and 42 Canadair developed Merlin powered derivatives. Almost 80
remain in commercial service, most as freighters.
